The road to winning the Riverina inter-club pennant final covers many kilometers and matches. To be in finals contention teams have to finish on top of their zone ladder to contest the semi-finals.
This year’s semi-finals were contested at Griffith Golf Club on Monday 22nd June. Finley (Zone 1) played Commercial Albury (Zone 4) and Wagga Wagga Country Club 1 (Zone 2) played Narrandera (Zone 3). Winners Narrandera and Commercial Albury qualified for the final played Wagga City Golf Club on Monday 29th June.
Monday was a perfect day for golf. Nervous tension subsided as all players took to the course and settled into their matches. Conditions were ideal even though rather chilly to start. Sunshine rapidly moved temperature to a very comfortable 13 degrees. Golf heated up too. As pairs arrived back at the club house it became obvious the result was heading to a nail-biting finish.
Teams and officials gathered on the balcony for a closer view. Four pairs in with two wins and two losses each. Number three pairing finished the 18th and continued walking to the first tee. All present agreed, “this is what a final should be – a close finish”. Perhaps the ladies teeing off again at the first tee thought otherwise!
As with finals there are the winners and runners-up. Both players finished with same score on the extra hole except the Narrandera player had to give her opponent a shot. Commercial Albury player won the match giving her team a 3/2 victory.
Celebrations continued in the club house with luncheon and presentation by RLGA President, Kath Lamont, of the perpetual shield to Commercial Albury captain, Raylee Nordennen.
Special thanks and appreciation are extended to all District ladies who made themselves available to play in this year’s competition, for the distances they travelled and the camaraderie among clubs this competition develops. Extra special thanks to pennant co-ordinator, Trish Gray, for her time in collating results and organising the final series.
The winning team is Chris Mildren, Lyn Valdovis, Raylee Nordennen (Captain), Angela Lee and Trudy Presnell.
